A Baker’s Dozen with Dave Haun

Savior Dave HaunA Baker’s Dozen with Dave Haun, the Tall, Bald Savior

Dave Haun is the tall, bald Savior you usually see close to Gavin, kind of an unspoken bodyguard. I don’t recall him ever saying a word but he gets his message across with that big gun he points.

I enjoyed learning all about this bodyguard Savior from Dave‘s answers to my Baker’s Dozen of questions. Seeing how well he handles those firearms I should have known he is in law enforcement. Keep reading and you can learn all about him, too.

Where were you born and where did you grow up?

I was born in Birmingham, Alabama. I grew up in Birmingham, but left for the military when I graduated from high school.

How did you get into acting?

I took Drama in high school.

What was your very first acting role?

My very first acting role was Trapper John in the play M.A.S.H. in high school.

How did you get the role of a Savior?

I saw an ad asking for “Big, mean looking guys.” I sent in my photo and they chose me. I was lucky.

Did you do anything special to prepare for the role to justify why he was part of the Saviors?

I didn’t at first know that I was a Savior until I arrived on set. I just knew that I was going to be on The Walking Dead. But since then, I have thought a lot about why my guy might have become a Savior. I think he was former Military and was recruited by Gavin. I think he was surviving alone when he met Gavin and he liked the structure that the Saviors offered.

Were you a The Walking Dead fan before landing the role?

I have been a fan since Day One. I absolutely love the show. I was so excited when I found out I was going to be on the show.

What has been your favorite acting role?

Being a Savior is the only acting role I have had so far. I have a career in Law Enforcement. Acting is just one of those things I’ve always wanted to try. I’m hoping to start a business teaching actors how to handle firearms, defensive tactics, and police and military tactics, so that when they get roles as cops or military they will look realistic.

Who has been an inspiration to you in your life and acting career?

My Dad has been my inspiration in life. He passed away several years ago. He was a good, kind man. I strive to be like him. My acting inspiration is the guys I had scenes with. Jayson Warner Smith as Gavin, Josh Mikel as Jared, Lennie James as Morgan, and Khary Payton as King Ezekiel. All of these guys are phenomenal actors. I watched them closely and tried to pick up hints.

Were there any funny or memorable behind the scene moments on The Walking Dead you experienced?

The first scene I was in, it was late in the day and the crew had put this huge light diffusing shade over the set. As the scene progressed and time passed, the shade would move. We had our marks of where we were supposed to stand, but every so often the Director of Photography would come over and tell me to move into the shade. He didn’t tell that to any of the other guys. So we made a joke saying that the light must have been reflecting off of my bald head and screwing up the shot. I moved so many times that at one point I was extremely close to Gavin.

Even though your first name is David, you go by the initials J. D., why?

I volunteer at an Equestrian facility that works with Deaf, Blind and Special Needs kids. When I first started, they kept calling me Mr. Dave. Every time they called me Mr. Dave, I would say, “No, it’s just Dave.” This went on for awhile until one of the workers started calling me JD. JD for Just Dave.

Can you tell us about your involvement with the Alabama Institute for the Deaf and Blind and the Marianna Greene Henry Special Equestrians?

Yes, I volunteer at this facility. They work with Blind, Deaf and Special Needs kids. They teach them Horsemanship. The horses are also very therapeutic for the kids. It’s very rewarding. The facility can’t operate without volunteers to help. The volunteers work with the students and horses assisting the instructors. It’s pretty awesome to see the looks on some of the students faces when they have accomplished something in the class.

Do you have any new acting roles in your future?

Not so far. I am hoping to get called back for more scenes on The Walking Dead.

Is there anything you can tell all us fans about yourself that we don’t know?

I’m pretty much a “what you see is what you get” kind of guy. I’ve been in Law Enforcement for over 24 years. I’m a combat veteran, I spent 10 years in the Army and deployed once to Iraq. I enjoy Photography and have been a professional photographer for 30 some odd years off and on. I’m a nerd. I love playing video games and I’m a huge Star Wars and Star Trek fan.

Yeah, I can see that law enforcement and military background in his stance, but the photography bit surprised me. Plus he’s a Star Wars/Star Trek nerd!! And just look at this fantastic photo of the real Dave Haun! I hope we get to see more of the tall, bald (and handsome) Savior in Season 8. Also, good luck starting a business teaching actors all the tactics they need to know. In the meantime, while we’re waiting on October, maybe you can volunteer along with Dave helping with the Special Equestrians.

I'm from a very rural area in SW Mississippi. I'm Mom to one grown son and a little Maltese (see profile picture). I came late to The Walking Dead but instantly fell in love with the series and Daryl. I binge-watched the first four and a half seasons to catch up before it came back on in January, 2015. Now I'm hopelessly hooked. I also watch Fear the Walking Dead and The Talking Dead. I love blogging and interviewing the cast members and cosplayers. I believe everyone deserves recognition for their contribution to the success of TWD and FTWD, no matter how small.

One Comment:

  1. Great guy! I love seeing him on TWD!
