The Mean Mug Savior

A Baker’s Dozen with Miguel Insignares, the Mean Mug Savior

Miguel Insignares calls himself the Mean Mug Savior. He can be seen following or near Negan, helping carry out his orders or backing him up….like he would even have a choice, if he desires to live.

Do you know what the Mean Mug Savior‘s claim to fame is though? He was the first Savior killed by Shiva. The first person Shiva attacked was one of the Scavengers. In the below video from Season 7 Episode 16 you can see Shiva pounce on the Mean Mug Savior, as he is firing his gun, at about 2:52. Goodbye, Mean Mug Savior.

I was so excited when I learned Miguel agreed to answer my Baker’s Dozen of questions! Read below to learn all about him.

Where were you born and where did you grow up?

I was born in New Jersey, but grew up in Florida.

How did you get into acting?

There was a casting call for a movie in my neighborhood starring Bryan Cranston, so I sent in my pic and got picked!

Was it always your dream to become an actor?

I’ve always been into the arts. I’ve been a professional artist/designer since high school, then I got into writing. I ultimately realized that my passion was in telling stories; whether through pen & ink, computer images, words, or acting.

What was your very first acting role?

I played an elf in a middle school play. I still remember my one line, “…no not exactly!!”

How did you get the role of a Savior?

I was hand-chosen by Greg Nicotero after sending in some mean-mug photos!

Did you do anything special to prepare for the role, maybe to help justify why he was part of the Saviors?

I always approached the character as someone who did what he had to in order to survive. He sometimes feels regret or remorse, but it’s superseded by his desire to stay alive. This new world order was dog-eat-dog and he was no one’s dinner (ironically, he was!) As far as the physicality of it, I always made sure to have a firm yet agile stance–on the edge; like a panther ready to pounce at his master’s (Negan) command.

Were you a The Walking Dead fan before landing the role?

Being lifelong comic book fans, my brother and I opened a comic book shop back in 1992 (Demolition Comics) which is still running. One day at the shop, a friend of mine pointed out this new comic book “The Walking Dead” and I’ve been reading it ever since!

What are your thoughts on being the first Savior to be taken out by Shiva?

That was a very cool experience and an iconic moment from the comic book. I was honored and excited to have my character taken out in such a memorable way!

Did you experience any funny or memorable behind the scene moments on The Walking Dead?

I remember the first day on set (Season 6-Episode 16) when my group of Saviors lined up at the first road block with Steven Ogg…it was wet and cold and raining and I was under the weather… but the jolt of adrenaline as I realized that I am now in the freakin’ Walking Dead made all my aches go away! To make things even more surreal, here comes Andrew Lincoln in full Rick wardrobe and carrying a prop AK-47…he approached each and everyone of us and shook our hands…”Hello, I’m Andy Lincoln, thanks for coming out….” Every other cast member in that scene was equally welcoming and warm along with the entire staff.

What has been your favorite acting role?

Who has been an inspiration to you in your life and acting career?

My Parents. They’ve always encouraged me to pursue my goals and treat everyone with kindness and respect.

Do you have any new acting roles in your future?

Is there anything you can tell all us fans about yourself that we don’t know?

I’ve had the opportunity to meet incredibly talented, funny, and colorful people. I’ve written and illustrated comic books, created products for major motion pictures, worked in radio morning shows, and been a Savior on the Walking Dead…and I feel like I’m just getting warmed up!!

Fangirls, this photo is no mean mug! Just look at this handsome guy when he is not mean mugging as a Savior for the cameras. I can’t wait to see what his new acting projects will be. Maybe he will clue us in before long. I’ll be looking for the name Miguel Insignares and for this face in the shows and movies I watch.

October is still a l-o-n-g time away! Will it ever get here? Hurry up, Season 8! I hope you’ll be watching with me when it returns. I hope you’ll be watching for Miguel, too! If you see him in something, let me know @sassypoo.

I'm from a very rural area in SW Mississippi. I'm Mom to one grown son and a little Maltese (see profile picture). I came late to The Walking Dead but instantly fell in love with the series and Daryl. I binge-watched the first four and a half seasons to catch up before it came back on in January, 2015. Now I'm hopelessly hooked. I also watch Fear the Walking Dead and The Talking Dead. I love blogging and interviewing the cast members and cosplayers. I believe everyone deserves recognition for their contribution to the success of TWD and FTWD, no matter how small.
