A Baker’s Dozen with The Notorious Negan

TilsonDarren Tilson as The Notorious Negan

Darren Tilson cosplays Negan from The Walking Dead as The Notorious Negan. I think this short video of Darren as Negan is hilarious!

Somebody better come open those gates in a hurry!  Lucille looks hungry and we all know how impatient Negan is.

The Notorious Negan

I love to watch Darren swaggering around as Negan with Lucille. I had no idea he was from England like many of our great cast of The Walking Dead. I hope you love learning all about The Notorious Negan as much as I did in his answers to my baker’s dozen of questions.

Where are you from and where do you live now?

I am originally from Sheffield, England, and currently live in the next town over, Barnsley, and have also lived in Canada for a short time, which was a great experience.

When did you realize you looked like Negan?

I used to be told on occasion I looked like Jeffery Dean Morgan when he was in Supernatural some time ago. Then when he appeared in The Walking Dead, I had it all the time. I decided to go to Whitby in the United Kingdom for Halloween dressed as him and had a great reception from it.

Were you a The Walking Dead fan and had you been to any comicons before you start cosplaying?

I am a huge zombie and horror movie fan and love the earlier George A. Romero movies so when The Walking Dead was announced, I was over the moon!

I had visited the memorabilia shows at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham in the past but the MCM Comic Con November 2016, was my first comicon and first time cosplaying other than dressing up for Halloween, usually as a vampire.

What made you decide to begin cosplaying?

I was on Facebook at the time and saw the Comic Con advert for Birmingham NEC and remembered I had loved the other ones I attended before, which were the older memorabilia shows. I then thought I would just go ahead and cosplay for it as Starlord from Guardians of the Galaxy as I loved the movie and wanted to get into the fun of it all. I made the mask, bought the jacket and other bits, and was set to go but after having loads of fun dressed as Negan on Halloween, I switched to cosplay him for the November Comic Con.

How long does it take for you to get in full wardrobe, makeup, and character?

Pretty quick actually, about 5 minutes. Trousers, boots, T-shirt, bullet belt; throw the jacket on, scarf on, gloves, apply some Ben Nye snow white hair on my beard to show the grey in his beard, then swing my bat over my shoulder, and off I go!

Have you met Jeffery Dean Morgan, and if so, what was his reaction?

Yes! He is a great guy he said, “You…are…awesome!” I was smiling from ear to ear as it was a great moment for me.

Darren and JDMHave you met other The Walking Dead actors? What were their reactions to you?

Yes, I met Norman Reedus. I was lucky, as a lovely lady asked me to be in her photo op with her. He was a very cool guy. He said, ” Daaaammmnn! You look better than Jeffery Dean Morgan!” haha He is a funny guy.

Darren and Norman
I also met David Morrissey. He was awesome in the show as the Governor and my favorite villain next to Jeffery Dean Morgan‘s Negan. I didn’t get a chance to speak to David much as it was a quick photo op but hope to next time.

Darren and DavidWhat has been your most memorable experience as The Notorious Negan?

Ah, wow, a lot of great moments! But I would say it has to be the first time I cosplayed him at a convention. I walked to the entrance and got asked for photos straight away. I was surprised. In fact, if you look at the old photos, I look like a rabbit caught in head lights. haha It was really surprising but also very cool that people got a kick out of it. I’ve really met some awesome people since starting the cosplay and I’m grateful for the followers I’ve had since. Everyone’s been great.

How many conventions or events do you attend each year?

I have around 5 confirmed cons this year and hope to fill the year with many more. Last year I did just the one.

Is cosplaying just a hobby or has it evolved into a career?

Well, I’m an artist and have mainly worked on personalized cartoon art for the past 5 years. Before that I did commissioned paintings of Marvel, DC, horror, and The Walking Dead, just as a paid hobby. Since starting the Negan cosplay, I have been given a lot of opportunities to work at cons in the cosplay so I requested, if it was possible, to sell artwork at cons too, which the con heads agreed to, so it’s a great chance to showcase my artwork at the same time as cosplaying as Negan.

What has been the craziest interaction you’ve had while in cosplay?

I think it was a lady asking to hug my leg for a photo. That was pretty crazy and being asked to bat zombie teddy bears, Negan Elmo, and Deadpool’s unicorn. haha

Is there any other character from another show or movie you would like to cosplay?

I would like to do Ash from Evil Dead, I’m a huge fan and he’s such a great character. People have also asked about me cosplaying the comedian from The Watchmen and even Bruce Wayne’s dad, Thomas Wayne, which would be cool.

Is there anything you can tell all us fans about yourself that we don’t know?

I own a cruiser-type motorcycle and like to go riding when I have some time off, especially in the summer. I love the feeling of the open road and seeing new places. I sometimes just take off with no particular destination, just end up wherever, and if I like it, stay for a few days, then on to the next place.

Note to Norman Reedus:  Sounds like this Jeffery Dean Morgan look-alike loves bikes and the open road as much as you two do. Does that qualify for a Ride with Norman Reedus episode?

When you go to a comicon, look for The Notorious Negan with Lucille across his shoulder. And, hopefully, you’ll be able to score a piece of his artwork! Even though he is HOT, you’re not allowed to take him home with you. but you can take a selfie with Darren and let me see it @sassypoo.

I’m from a very rural area in SW Mississippi. I’m Mom to one grown son and a little Maltese (see profile picture). I came late to The Walking Dead but instantly fell in love with the series and Daryl. I binge-watched the first four and a half seasons to catch up before it came back on in January, 2015. Now I’m hopelessly hooked. I also watch Fear the Walking Dead and The Talking Dead. I love blogging and interviewing the cast members and cosplayers. I believe everyone deserves recognition for their contribution to the success of TWD and FTWD, no matter how small.
