who portrays Deputy Sheriff Rick Grimes of The Walking Dead at parties, events, and fundraisers all around the United States. His real name is Trent Roberts and he’s a hard-working family man in real life. He has a natural resemblance to Rick Grimes and has a great time making people smile.
When did you realize you looked like Rick Grimes?
It really started to be obvious around Season 3. That’s when I started having people make comments. I also make sure to correct people that I look like Rick Grimes and not so much like Andrew Lincoln. If I shave the beard and cut my hair I don’t look like Andrew in Season 1.
Had you been to any Comic Cons before you start cosplaying?
Just a couple of smaller cons in the Dallas area and then the bigger one last June there. But I did cosplay Rick from the very first one I attended.
What made you decide to begin cosplaying?
I have two sons that are wanting to go to San Diego Comicon and I told them before we made that trip we needed to attend some local cons to see if they even liked it. Of course they wanted to dress up and wanted me to also and I had already had people telling me how much I looked like Rick, so it was just an obvious choice.
How long does it take for you to get in full wardrobe, makeup, and character?
That was part of why I cosplayed Rick at the first con we went to. It was very easy for me. All I needed to buy was the jacket and gun belt. When I attended Walker Stalker Comicon Atlanta, people kept asking how long it took to get in costume and get the hair just right and the blood and makeup. It literally takes me about 15 minutes. I’m lucky that if I want to do the wet hair look Rick has in certain episodes, all I have to do is wet it and spray in conditioner and it curls exactly like his. I have really been working on different wardrobe options and looks so I can be Rick from multiple seasons. If I’m going to continue this, I don’t want to be stuck with only one look. I will say though that even though it comes easy and I can be in character very quickly, I am a bit of a perfectionist. I will take a screenshot of a scene in an episode and make sure the blood, hair, bandaids are all exactly right. I do the same with wardrobe to make sure I have the same wear and tears that he does.
Where are you from and will you go anywhere to cosplay?
Originally from Louisiana but have lived in the Dallas area for about 25 years now. I travel quite a bit for work so I am a bit selective about how much and where I will travel for cosplay. There has to be a balance between this new undertaking, work, and my family time. I went on the Walker Stalker Cruise 2017 this year and had a great experience! I reconnected with friends I had met in Atlanta and made a whole boatload of new friends. I’m still fairly new to this and am amazed at how tight a family this Walking Dead fan base is. I’m very happy to be a part of it now and am looking forward to traveling around this year and doing more of these events. Hopefully, I will see everyone again at one of them or on next year’s cruise.
Have you met Andrew Lincoln and if so, what was his reaction?
I was not able to meet him but did get to ask him a question at the last Walker Stalker Comicon Atlanta panel he did on that Sunday morning. Norman was on stage with him and pointed me out and commented to Andrew, “He looks just like you.” Andrew asked me if I could come in to work for him on Monday. It was nice to at least get the acknowledgement.
Have you met other The Walking Dead actors?
Scott Wilson, Michael Rooker, and the nicest celebrity I think I’ve ever met, Steven Yeun.
What has been your most memorable experience as Trick Grimes?
So many. Just seeing the looks on people’s faces when they see me and aren’t sure if it’s Andrew or not. I had a meeting with a girl around 12 or 13 years old and she was shaking and in tears when she met me. It really hits home to me then that I may be the closest she ever gets to meeting “Rick”. At that point this goes from just being a fun hobby to an obligation to make sure she has a great experience to remember.
How many conventions or events do you attend each year?
I am planning on attending about 6 or 7 this year and see how it goes. I’m already planning on going back on the Walker Stalker Cruise next year so look me up!
Is cosplaying just a hobby or has it evolved into a career?
It is a hobby. I have a career that is very demanding of my time and it always has to come first. I will say I am putting a lot more time and effort into this hobby than I thought I would when this first started.
What has been the craziest interaction you’ve had while in cosplay?
It’s happened a few times when I’ve been in Senoia that people who have actually had interactions with Andrew come up to me and just start talking to me about it thinking I’m him. What’s even crazier is this has happened when I’m not actually cosplaying and just in regular clothes.
Is there any other character from another show or movie you would like to cosplay?
Haven’t really given it a lot of thought because cosplaying Rick just comes so naturally and is so relevant at the moment. I have gotten from some people that I look a bit like Cullen from Hell on Wheels. Could maybe see doing Jonah Hex also.
Is there anything you can tell all us fans about yourself that we don’t know, but are dying to?
Not really. No secret hidden mutant powers or anything like that. I guess I’m still just trying to wrap my head around all this. A year ago I would have never guessed I would have a following and be traveling to conventions because I look like someone else.
Trent entered the Survivor Cosplay contest on the Walker Stalker Cruise 2017 and won First Place! Here’s a picture of him winning. Enid (Katelyn Nacon) and Carl (Chandler Riggs) were the judges until it got down to the top five, then the crowd got to decide the winner.
Hmm, I wonder if his wife realizes she’s waking up with Rick Grimes, Deputy Sheriff, every morning? And you know what they say about those Texas men and the size of their hats! Thanks so much, Trick Grimes, for sharing bits and pieces of your life and cosplay with us. We’ll be looking for you!
