The Walking Dead News Update – Casting, SDCC Schedule & More!
Now that filming is in full swing, some news has been trickling out of Georgia about the upcoming season of The Walking Dead. No, no further rumors on who met Lucille, but that’s ok. We’ve waited this long, what’s a few more months?
Some news that has come out has been about two new possible actress joining the cast for season 7. TVLline reported last week that Anna Gunn (Skyler White, Breaking Bad) and Kiernan Shipka (Sally Draper, Mad Men). TVLine had a bit of info on their characters, but nothing too specific. However, I can’t imagine that they would bring on these two top notch actress if the roles were of significance.
Naomi is a grandmotherly type who, having lost so many loved ones, is now willing to do whatever it takes not to have to bury any more. (Maybe she’s being introduced to counsel Carol about the awful necessities of the post-apocalyptic world… ) On the flip side is Jennie, a sunny-side-up kinda teenager — oh, Caaarl! — who sounds a lot like Beth 2.0, “kind, with a world-weary toughness.”
As Michael Ausiello mentions in the full column, neither of these characters are from the comics, and I think that’s a good thing. The Walking Dead has always been successful giving their fans a nice balance of source material and new stories. With a show that has so many great moments in that source material, it is nice to have some new surprising twists that none of us can see coming… Terminus, anyone?
My guess is that Jennie is definitely someone to come in to mess up Carl’s world and give him a bit of conflict with Enid. Though, I can’t imagine she’ll be too thrilled with him when she finally gets out of that closet. The Naomi character is more of a mystery though. She could be from Negan’s camp, or she could be a new face from the place where Carol and Morgan are headed.
I do like the speculation of Naomi’s role though in the above quote from the TVLine article. Carol is in desperate need of counsel right now. Her crisis of faith has grown even deeper, and if she doesn’t get her head on straight soon, I fear she will end up with the same fate as her comic counterpart afterall.
Panel Schedule for TWD & FTWD at San Diego Comic Con
Oh, it is getting closer to one of my favorite times of year! In just a couple weeks, all nerd eyes will be pointed towards the west coast, and the annual San Diego Comic Con. It is our moment during the hiatus where we finally get to see some real footage of the new season, which gives us fuel for the debate fire leading into the fall.
Unfortunately, I won’t be heading west to attend the convention. However, that won’t stop us from streaming every moment and reporting any news we can pass along to our readers. While the official schedule has yet to be posted on the main site for SDCC, AMC released the schedule for the shows they were showcasing at this year’s event – The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead and Preacher.
Below are TWD & FTWD Panel info:
The Walking Dead panelists include cast members Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Steven Yeun, Lauren Cohan, Danai Gurira, Chandler Riggs, Michael Cudlitz, Sonequa Martin-Green, Christian Serratos, Ross Marquand, Josh McDermitt and Jeffrey Dean Morgan along with Executive Producer and Showrunner Scott M. Gimple, Executive Producer Robert Kirkman, Executive Producer Gale Anne Hurd, Executive Producer, Director and Special Effects Make-up Supervisor Greg Nicotero and Executive Producer David Alpert. The panel will be moderated by Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick. A trailer, which may or may not offer clues to The Walking Dead’s season six cliffhanger, is expected to debut during the panel, as well as a premiere date for season seven.
The Walking Dead’s panel is slated for Friday, July 22, at 1 PM PT in Hall H. It is preceded by Fear the Walking Dead’s panel at 12 PM PT.
Fear the Walking Dead panelists include cast members Kim Dickens, Cliff Curtis, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Frank Dillane, Lorenzo James Henrie, Mercedes Mason, Colman Domingo and Danay Garcia along with Executive Producer and Showrunner David Erickson, Executive Producers Robert Kirkman, Gale Anne Hurd, Greg Nicotero and Dave Alpert. The panel will be moderated by Talking Dead host Chris Hardwick.
I am very excited to see any new footage they want to show us, but I am more curious how they will be able to mask it in order to keep their secret safe until October. Best guess… they will give a nice long cut of a Ricktator-type speech. That works to keep Lucille’s victim a secret, and also is enough to ramp us up to get really excited for the new season and the conflict that is now at his front gate.
However they decide to do it, I have no doubt it will leave us all reeling, and probably cursing, but really, REALLY psyched for October to arrive.
The Walking Dead Season 6 Blu-Ray Release Date
If you are a collector of the seasons on DVD, season 6 is available on August 23rd on Blu-Ray/DVD. It will feature all 16 episodes, but the alternate version of Negan’s entrance in the finale. Of course, the usual bonus features and audio commentary tracks will be available, but, c’mon… we’re all going to get it to hear what Negan SHOULD have sounded like, right?
Don’t forget to check your cable guide, because AMC aired The Walking Dead Season 1 marathon in black and white over the holiday weekend. I believe they are scheduling Sunday binge sessions of each season leading up to Fear the Walking Dead’s return.
Fear the Walking Dead returns in August, 2016 and The Walking Dead returns to AMC in October, 2016.
